Barrel House Distilling Co. is proud to announce the release of OAK RUM

February 20, 2012

Barrel House Distilling Co. is proud to announce the release of Kentucky’s first Bourbon Barrel Aged Rum:
OAK RUM
Rum in Kentucky? Isn’t that only a seafaring drink? Well, that’s a common misconception — but Rum is actually a drink of the Americas — a favorite in early colonial times. While Kentucky may not be a seaside state — it has more navigable inland waterways than any other state in the lower 48! Nautical themes are common along many of the lakes and rivers scattered throughout the commonwealth, where the riverboat reigned as king in days gone by. With a hint of Kentucky flavor brought out by bourbon barrel aging, we think OAK RUM will appeal to bourbon and rum aficionados alike!
Our rum is unique for many reasons, but first in that it is the only Kentucky rum, to our knowledge. In addition, it is made along the Town Branch of Elkhorn Creek, just upstream from some of the finest distilleries in the world — our source for the bourbon barrels used to age our product. We think you will find OAK RUM to be unique — a sippin’ rum at barrel proof. Like a fine Kentucky bourbon, this rum is best on the rocks, though it certainly works well in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. The recipe combines the two spirits of the Americas together. Definitely a dark rum, but the bourbon barrel aging gives it a hint of bourbon and charred wood — OAK wood that is. We are very pleased with the results of our first aged product. We think you will be too.
Why OAK RUM for the name?
First, the mighty OAK is the most common tree in Kentucky’s rich forest land. OAK trees have been logged for years in Kentucky, where the extensive network of rivers allowed for easy transport of timber throughout the United States. Riverboats made from OAK can still be found on Kentucky waterways to this day. Also, OAK is considered a symbol of strength and endurance, used in many military insignia. Finally, OAK wood is used for multiple purposes, but may be best known in Kentucky for its role in bourbon production — aging in particular. Given that we aged our RUM in previously used charred OAK bourbon barrels, we felt it was only fitting to name it after this noble tree.
Hence the name OAK RUM — a bourbon barrel aged product from Kentucky.
Ask for OAK RUM at your favorite liquor retailer, or come down to the distillery for a tour and tasting! By the way, we have reserved and signed the first 50 bottles as a special release (available soon) only at our distillery. Details to follow…
As always, thanks for your support and enjoy our spirits responsibly!
