Safe Ride KY Offers $20 Discounts To Prevent Impaired Driving On Independence Day

For Immediate Release – June 29, 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky – Following the success of its Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day campaigns, the Safe Ride KY coalition today announced that it is offering Kentuckians $20,000 worth of discounted rides during Independence Day to prevent impaired driving.

Individuals can claim $20 in free ride credits by entering promo code SAFERIDEKY4TH in the Lyft app or mentioning it when calling Bardstown’s Bourbon City Taxi at 502-349-5001 and ordering a ride.

Discounts will be available for the full range of Kentucky’s Independence Day celebrations between Friday, June 29 and 4 a.m. Thursday, July 5, where services are available and while supplies last.

“As the producers of America’s only native spirit, Kentucky’s Bourbon and distilled spirits industry is proud to work with community partners to make sure America’s independence is celebrated responsibly,” KDA President Eric Gregory said. “Stay hydrated, drink mindfully, and enjoy a free sober ride home on us.”

The Safe Ride KY coalition is led by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association and joined by Lyft, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Kentucky, Independent Stave Company, Buzick Construction, and District 8 Louisville Councilman Brandon Coan.

More information is available online at www.saferideky.com.

This is the third holiday in the group’s safe ride campaign, which is promoted to consumers of legal drinking age online and in bars, liquor stores and other retail environments where beverage alcohol is sold.

The first two holidays delivered 1,600 safe rides and attracted 160 new safe ride users. That success prompted on-demand ride service Lyft to match Safe Ride KY’s local investment.

Other safe ride services that have participated in this campaign include Louisville’s CityScoot and, now, Bardstown’s Bourbon City Taxi. The latter is particularly important to include since Kentucky’s Office of Highway Safety reports that a majority of impaired collision fatalities occur on rural roads.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety and local police forces are continuing their commitment to promoting the campaign as an effective complement to their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over efforts.

“While our office promotes the Drive Sober message year-round, we increase awareness during holidays that tend to see an increase in alcohol consumption,” KOHS Executive Director Dr. Noelle Hunter said. “Drunken driving-related crashes are 100 percent preventable, so we’re asking motorists to be responsible and plan a ride before the celebration begins.”

With so many safe and affordable options, Safe Ride KY partners hope no one will drive impaired during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Retailers who would like to receive materials to promote the free safe ride code, or groups that would like to sponsor the coalition, should contact KDA’s Director of Social Responsibility Ali Edelstein at [email protected].

“We’re always looking for new partners to join us and expand this critical initiative,” she said.
