KDA Statement on Passage of Senate Bill 11

March 29, 2016

“This is indeed a happy hour for our signature Bourbon industry. We are proud to raise a glass in thanks to the legislature for passing these bold, sweeping reforms that will create jobs and spur additional investment in our beloved Commonwealth.

“Our legendary distilleries and emerging craft producers are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to increase Bourbon production and expand their Kentucky Bourbon Trail® experiences to meet the growing global thirst for our iconic spirit.

“Senate Bill 11 will escalate those efforts and level the playing field with our partners in the beer and wine industry, while allowing distilleries to achieve their potential as major ‘Napa Valley’ attractions.

“This is a landmark, bipartisan bill that sends a clear message: Kentucky is the one, true and authentic home of Bourbon.

“This is a giant step out of Prohibition‐era policies by the largest vote margin for an alcohol bill in modern times. We have the tools and resources necessary for success, as well as two centuries of rich tradition and unparalleled craftsmanship.

“With the passage of this legislation – and the expanded opportunities it brings – Kentucky is undoubtedly the top‐flight choice for distilleries large and small, old and new, all working in unison to elevate our timeless craft.

“We’d like to specifically thank House and Senate Leadership, Sen. John Schickel and Rep. Dennis Keene, Reps. Linda Belcher and David Osborne, and all members who voted for its historic passage.”

‐‐‐ Eric Gregory, President, Kentucky Distillers’ Association, a non‐profit trade group founded in 1880 that represents 27 of the state’s distilleries.
