MORE: Town Branch Distillery opened in the heart of Lexington in October 2012 and was the first distillery to be built in Lexington in 100 years. It is named after the Town Branch stream, the waterway rich with limestone that once enticed numerous distillers to set up operations along its courses. Built with Kentucky limestone, the 20,000 square foot facility utilizes two traditional copper pot stills imported from Scotland. Town Branch Distillery currently is the only metropolitan location on The Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, which drew half a million visitors from across the world last year. Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. is the producer of award-winning beer and spirits authentic to Kentucky. In 2000, Irish entrepreneur Dr. Pearse Lyons, the founder and president of Alltech, acquired the historic downtown Lexington brewing facility, which has grown to become one of the few joint brewing and distilling operations in the world. Its Kentucky Ale family of brews – Kentucky Ale®, Kentucky Kölsch™, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale®, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout™ and Kentucky IPA™ – has collected numerous medals at events, including the 2012 U.S. Open Beer Championships, the 2012 North American Brewers Association Beer Fest and the 2010 World Beer Cup. In 2012, the company became the newest stop on the world-renowned Kentucky Bourbon Trail® with the opening of its Town Branch Distillery, which crafts Town Branch® Bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve® malt whiskey and Bluegrass Sundown® bourbon-infused coffee liqueur.
